Southeastern Oklahoma State University made the decision to close the campus and cancel all classes following the arrival of a strong cold front that resulted in hazardous winter weather in the Durant area. The university officials have stated that in order to keep the students, faculty, and staff safe, the closing of the campus will continue till Tuesday.
The cold front came down to southeastern Oklahoma on a weekend and caused temperature drops, snowfall, and slippery roads. With the weather getting worse, the city staff and university main administration first assessed the safety of the travel as well as the campus condition before deciding on the shutdown of the university.
University Police also shared that a decision to close the university is not a matter of the campus only but involves coordination with other entities as well. Once the campus gets to this stage, ultimately it is up to the City of Durant and the lead director of the campus to decide on the closing of the campus, the police have explained.
“When that occurs, the role of the police is to secure the campus and check that all the people here are safe, even if the kids go out for a little snow day, ” Campus Police said.
During closures, campus police explained that their focus shifts.
“After all, their primary focus is going to be events taking place inside the campus rather than problems from outside, whether that is a fight or someone running through the campus at high speed, ” the authorities said.
University officials urge students and faculty to keep an eye on the official announcements for updates as the weather gets better.
