The SPARKS dance team at Southeastern Oklahoma State University continues to energize campus life through performances that combine athleticism, creativity and school spirit.
Made up of students from a variety of academic majors, the SPARKS perform at athletic games, Holiday Follies, and university events throughout the year They even have their own Spring Show every year. Their routines blend hip-hop, pom and mixed dance styles, allowing the team to adapt to different audiences and settings while maintaining a strong, unified presence.
The Dance team is coach by Riley Coker, who is also director of the theatre department at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Coker started the dance team in 2005.
Practices and performances are centered at the Visual and Performing Arts Center, commonly known as the VPAC, where the team prepares choreography and builds chemistry. Each season the team dances like a family. They look out for each other even outside the studio and participates in team bonding exercises. According to team officer Tessa Jenkins, the environment within SPARKS is a major part of what makes the group successful.
“We’re more than just a dance team,” Jenkins said. “We’re a family that works hard for each other and supports one another both on and off the floor.”
That sense of teamwork is reflected in the discipline required to balance academics with rehearsals, travel and game-day performances. Team members commit hours each week to practice, conditioning and preparation, all while representing the university in front of students, faculty and community members.
SPARKS performances are a familiar sight at home basketball games, where the team helps build excitement and engage the crowd. They also appear at special events across campus, contributing to the overall atmosphere and school pride
Jenkins said dedication and individuality are both important qualities for dancers interested in joining the team.
“Don’t be afraid to be yourself,” Jenkins said. “That personal flair is what makes each dancer stand out.”
As the semester continues, the SPARKS remain focused on maintaining strong performances while fostering a supportive team culture. Through hard work, collaboration and passion for dance, the team continues to play an important role in student life at Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
