Ashley Monroe, one third of the country trio Pistol Annies, released “Like a Rose” on March 5, proving she can release a successful solo album.
Monroe is one of the most talented singers to come out of Nashville in a really long time. Her voice is as smooth and sweet as honey. It is a voice I can listen for hours at a time and never get tired of hearing.
In the past, Monroe has collaborated with artists ranging from The Raconteurs to Train. Monroe even co-wrote Miranda Lambert’s hit song “You and Your Cigarettes.”
Even though she is a very talented artist, Monroe has struggled to make a successful solo album.
Her first album “Satisfied” flopped in 2006, failing to make it to the top of the charts.
However, that is not the case with “Like a Rose.”
Since forming the trio Pistol Annies with Miranda Lambert and Angaleena Presley, Monroe has gained quite a following.
“Like a Rose” made it to No. 10 on the Billboard country album chart.
The album is reminiscent of the classic country and western sound, filled with steel guitars and country twang.
The subject matter is sad and edgy. Sex, sadness, death, unplanned pregnancy, criminal acts and substance abuse are all discussed on the album.
One of my favorite songs is “Two Weeks Late.” The song sounds like a classic country song but with a very modern subject of unplanned pregnancy.
The lyrics are sad and dark. Monroe’s voice is haunting as she croons, “Yeah I feel sorry for me, know that I got a secret that I’m gonna keep. When you’re living in sin I guess sometimes that’s just what you get.”
Another favorite is “You Ain’t Dolly,” a duet with Blake Shelton. In the song, Shelton refers to himself as “the guy they wrote about in 50 Shades of Grey.”
Fans of country music should definitely check out “Like a Rose.” It is a great country album that takes you back to the old days of classic country.
