It’s almost that time of the year when everyone can allow their imagination to be free in order to create the most interesting and surprising costumes. Of course, I am talking about Halloween.
For me Halloween was something that I mostly saw in movies. I have always craved to go to what I used to call “real” Halloween party.
In my country, Romania, we don’t get to celebrate Halloween the way it is celebrated in United States. It is the same for most of the international students who come to the U.S. from other countries.
So, you can imagine how surprised I was when I first visited a store dedicated to Halloween. I immediately took a picture and sent it to my friends from back home.
I only had one problem; which costume I should choose.
This year there are international students at Southeastern who are going to experience Halloween for the first time. Others are celebrating it for the second or third time, but they are still excited about it.
“I’ve never celebrated Halloween in Russia and no one does. It was a completely new experience for me,” said Southeastern alumna Masha Volokhova.
Volokhova said that she will never forget her first Halloween party. “I felt like I was at one of the parties that I always saw on movies at TV. I remember calling my sister the next day and telling her how much fun I had,” said Volokhiva.
Some international students celebrate Halloween to some degree in their country but not the same way it is celebrated in the U.S. “Back home in Jordan people go to clubs on Halloween night wearing kind of silly costumes,” said Awj Al-Nabali. He added that there are not stores dedicated to Halloween in Jordan where people can buy costumes. “I’ve never been to a Halloween party before, but I am curious to see how they celebrate it here,” said Al-Nabali.
There are some countries that celebrate Halloween almost the same way as it is celebrated in the U.S. “Honestly I can’t think of any difference of how the Halloween is celebrated here and how it is celebrated in Canada,” said junior Jeff Hunter.
Brazil is another country that gives Halloween as much attention as the U.S. “I’ve never celebrated a Halloween in the U.S. yet, but what I heard and saw in the movies looks a lot like the way we celebrate it in Brazil,” said freshman Renato Joao.
Whether they will celebrate Halloween for the first time in the U.S or if they have been celebrated it here before, all the international students seem excited about it.
The only decision left is to decide what costume they are going to wear.
