College is a time when girls want to begin building a more fashionable closet. As internships and dates start popping up, a girl wants to look her best.
There are ten things that every college girl needs if she wants to start making her way to a more stylish closet:
- The dark wash jean: Nothing is more effortlessly chic than a pair of perfect-fitting dark jeans. It doesn’t matter if they’re in a skinny fit or wide-legged, just look for a pair that makes you look and feel amazing.
- The leather jacket: There is something incredibly empowering about wearing a tough leather jacket that makes you feel like you can conquer the world. Find one that suits you: Maybe with a lot of zippers and studs or simple and unadorned. Don’t be afraid of the faux, they’ve come a long way since pleather and faux leather can look really expensive.
- The day dress: Don’t be afraid to wear a pretty dress during the day. There are no rules, just make sure it’s not too nighttime. If it would fit in at a club, it’s too nighttime. It can be floral, striped, polka-dotted, whatever you like as long as you feel pretty.
- The plain white tee: This is a blank canvas for you. With a plain white tee, you can wear a wild necklace or wear bright red lipstick and never be too fussy. The fit should be relaxed and comfy.
- The black boot: As a general rule, a pair of black boots goes with anything. Let’s be realistic. You won’t wear them unless they’re comfy, so no heels. Go for a pair of punky lace-ups or a more understated pair of knee-high riding boots.
- The button-down: Don’t think that a button-down shirt is too stuffy for you. They come in so many prints and materials and can be worn in so many ways. Try an oversized one in chiffon or a bright colored one with a studded collar. Try tying it at the waist or tucking it in with a wild belt.
- The flirty skirt: There are so many cute skirts out there, but don’t be overwhelmed. Pick one in a color that goes with a lot, like a breezy navy one that has a lot of movement. Try any length you like; mini, midi, maxi or anything in between.
- The cocktail dress: College girls have a tendency to go for the shortest and tightest party dresses, but that doesn’t always mean sexiest. Find one that you won’t have to keep pulling down all night long. Have fun with this one and go for a bright color or dazzling embellishments.
- The blazer: Yves Saint Laurent called this “le smoking jacket.” It’s a simple and simply chic black blazer. Wear it to an interview or roll up the sleeves with a graphic tee and jeans for every day. If it’s too boring for you, they come in all colors and patterns.
- The weirdo item: This is a wildcard. Buy the item you always wished that you could “pull off.” That notion isn’t real. You can pull off anything with the right amount of confidence. Buy a tube of ruby red lipstick or a pair of neon jeans and wear them with your head held high.
