Student participation in homecoming initially slumped this semester before Student Government Association pushed back the entry deadlines, according to sophomore computer information systems major Joseph Badan, student senator and homecoming co-chair.
The issue was remedied by giving teams an extra few days to sign up, raising the number of sweepstakes team entries from five to nine, according to Badan.
Still, since this happened with an event as large and well-publicized as homecoming, it makes us wonder why students are apparently hesitant to be involved in campus activities.
Students, participation in campus activities is essential to receiving a meaningful, complete college education.
Why not take advantage of the opportunities Student Life, SGA and other organizations offer?
Our school may not host enormous events as frequently as larger state schools, but we believe SE successfully caters to its students’ wants and needs as best it can with its budget, size and other resources.
One unique way SE does this is through the annual homecoming week, a time during which students in organizations can form groups to compete in competitive, fun events based on a different theme each year.
Happening in the latter half of a year that has seen several major superhero movie releases, this year’s homecoming week events are aptly superhero themed.
Why many students aren’t as eager as expected to participate in the week’s events is beyond us.
Each year’s event theme is chosen by student senators to best entertain and please the student body while promoting school spirit.
This year, “The Fantastic Gold and Blue” theme has done an excellent job of generating excitement among those participating, though that number may be smaller than hoped.
For students who will be around next year, we encourage you to join an organization and become involved in homecoming and other smaller-scale events.
For those of you making the most out of your last semester or year as a Southeastern student, there is still opportunity.
Spend the rest of your time here open to what is being offered to you by our school.
Meet new people. Try new things. Play games with superheroes.
