A professor once asked his students if anyone knew what apathy was. After the hands had gone back down, he followed that question with another: “Does anyone care?”
Around Southeastern, the answer would likely be something to the effect of a shrug and a noncommittal grunt. For some reason, the majority of students here seem incredibly unenthused about nearly everything.
True, students who commute do have a more difficult time participating in activities outside of class, as do students who work. No one is asking that you dance in the streets wearing only blue body paint after your anatomy class, your biology homework and your shift at the casino.
The Student Government Association is active on campus, but they couldn’t even get enough nominees to fill all the vacant Senate seats in the last election. Additionally, the senators chosen in that special election were elected based on approximately 130 votes. This university has over 4,000 students.
Sororities and fraternities have recruitment drives, but the other clubs and various organizations on campus are, for the most part, strangely quiet.
Why is there no pride in Southeastern? Why are gold and blue only worn on the days that net a discount from the grill, if then?
To be fair, SE students usually do come out and support fundraisers, such as Tackle Domestic Violence and Cardinal Key’s various activities to help former student Ashlea Chapman’s family with the expense of her lung transplant.
Perhaps we care about the people touched by our school, but not our school itself.
It’s just a theory. We would love for you to prove us wrong.
