Southeastern will host the 10th Native American Symposium this November.
On Nov. 14 and 15, SE will be at the center of a Native American Cultural Showcase. There will be many guest speakers, exhibits and Native American themed activities.
According to Dr. Mark Spencer, cochair of the symposium and professor of English, humanities and language, the symposium, “is most important for educating the students and local community members of Southeastern Oklahoma about the notable achievements and history of Native Americans.”.
The title of this year’s event is, Native Ground: Protecting and Preserving History, Culture and Customs. The symposium will consist of two days of activities and events focusing on different aspects of Native
American culture.
The event began at 1 p.m. on Nov. 14. and activities will continue on Nov. 15, beginning at 9 a.m.,there will be three separate events in the student union. Events are made up of several presentations.
“Native Representations” will be presented in room 213, “Native Performance and Film” will be located in room 323 and presentations over Native American politics will be in room 303.
At 10 a.m. there will be three more separate events in the student union.
“The Native Museum” will be presented in room 213. “Native Memories” will be located in room 323 and another “Native Politics” presentation group will be located in room 303.
Other activities are scheduled throughout the day.
The symposium will end with poetry and short story readings in the student union auditorium.
Ron Wallace, adjunct instructor of English at SE, will present “Of Horses and Hawks and the World in Between.”
