The Southeastern Math Club is now looking for new members. No matter what level of math a student is interested in, the Math Club could be fun for anyone. It gives “students the opportunity to get together and have fun outside of their classwork and get to know each other and the faculty better,” said Math Club sponsor, Dr. Christopher Moretti.
The Math Club is looking for students who are interested in exploring “parts of mathematics that they haven’t seen before,” said Moretti.
The only requirement in order for students to join the Math Club is to be currently enrolled at Southeastern. All majors are accepted and encouraged to students who enjoy mathematics, Moretti said.
The Southeastern Math Club is a recognized student organization supported by the math department. Some of the math professors help with meetings and events, while others sponsor trips and conferences. This year, Moretti and Dr. Brett Elliott are the sponsors.
The Math Club will host between four and six activities each semester. “About half of these events are social ones, such as movie nights or end-of-semester parties,” said Moretti. “The other half of the events are academic.”
Members are given the opportunity to travel to two conferences a year, the Mathematical Association of America and the Texas Oklahoma Regional Undergraduate Symposium. “Southeastern is the only university which has won the TORUS ‘Math Jeopardy’ competition twice since the conference started in 2005,” Moretti said. Both conferences are held in the spring semester.
If interested, students can contact Moretti or Elliott through the math department.
