SE will soon be celebrating “Stormcoming,” or Homecoming 2013. Student events begin on Sept. 30. and activities continue throughout the week building up to a parade and football game on Oct.5.
The theme for students this year is “Storming through the Sequels.”
According to Billie Mobley, homecoming chair, “The games will be sequel based and the floats in the parade can be based off of movie sequels. “
According to Nick Mcbrayer, vice president of the Student Government Association, the theme is also a play on the number of mascots SE has had through the years.
Student events include “2 Fast 2 Inquisitive” on Monday Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. and “Seeking the Sequels” on Oct. 1 at 6 p.m..
In order to participate in homecoming, student groups must meet entry form deadlines and enter in the parade.
Additional activities that student groups may participate in are the homecoming queen/king contest, the Big Man on Campus competition and sweepstakes.
In order to qualify, royalty candidates needed to be sponsored by a recognized campus organization and be a full-time undergraduate. They are also required to have at least a 2.5 GPA and completion of at least 30 credit hours.
Big Man on Campus is a competition sponsored by Cardinal Key. The objective is the raise the greatest amount of funds to be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. The competition is open to both men and women.
Sweepstakes is a competition between all student teams participating in Homecoming. The winner is based on the percentage of attendance. Bonus points are awarded for the winners of competitive events. The group who has the most members present throughout all of homecoming is declared the winner. SE alumni will be hosting their own set of events.
Alumni events will begin Oct. 3 with the “Night at the Museum.” The event will be held in the Three Valley Museum located at 401 W. Main from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The Durant Historical Society will be hosting the event and the Southeastern Hub for Arts Resources in Education (SHARE) will be auctioning off student artwork..
All proceeds will go to southeast Oklahoma schools in the areas of art, music and theater. Refreshments will be provided.
On Oct. 4 the Silverado Golf Course will host the 27th annual Whang Bang Golf Tournament. Those wishing to participate can register online at alumni.SE.edu. The player fee is $100 and hole sponsership is $50. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. and the tournament will start at 9 a.m.
Later that day will be the Distinguished Awards Banquet, at 5:30 p.m. in the Visual and Performing Arts Center.
Ending the days events, will be the Houston Debate Reception, located at 200 W. Main in the Massey building. This allows socializing between communication majors past and present as well as a reception to honor a remarkable teacher and debate coach.
There will also be a True Blue Rally at 8 p.m. at the amphitheater.
On Oct. 5 the day’s events will begin with Coffee & Conversation with Savage Legends in the Bloomer Sullivan Gym. Former athletes will gather to visit fellow great
The homecoming parade will begin at 10 a.m. followed by the Alumni Tailgate Alley across from Paul Laird Field at 11 a.m.
The day will continue with campus tours beginning at 11:30 a.m. The tours will be leaving from the entrance of Paul Laird Field.
Football events will begin with the SE marching band at 1:45 p.m., immediately followed by the pre-game ceremony, which will recognize distinguished alumni.
The football game against Texas A&M will kickoff at Paul Laird Field at 2 p.m. Homecoming events for alumni will end with the Discover Durant Market Fair, beginning at 6 p.m. in downtown Durant.
