Welcome Week is the official kick-off to the 2013 fall semester at Southeastern. Welcome Week is a week full of activities for not only new students but returning students as well.
Liz Howard, Student Life Coordinator said Welcome Week “Is to provide students with activities to connect with other students and the University.”
Welcome Week began on Saturday, Aug. 17, when new students were able to move into their assigned dorm rooms.
There was also Freshman Convocation in Montgomery Auditorium followed by a Convocation Cookout on the front lawn. Later that night the Residence Hall Association sponsored free massages to start the semester off stress free.
Sunday was filled with residence hall orientation but ended on a sweet note with Sundaes on Sunday in the Student Union also sponsored by RHA.
On Monday, Aug. 19, and Tuesday Aug. 20 there was a group sitting under the clock tower from 7 a.m. to noon for “We’ve Got Answers”. This activity is intended to help students find their classes and answer any other questions.
Also on Monday there was an immunization clinic from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Union atrium. To wrap up the first day of classes hypnotist, Dr. Minter, performed in the Fine Arts Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m.
On Tuesday Aug. 20 the Native American Center for Student Success and the Native American Student Association sponsored Social Stickball and hot dogs from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Southeastern hosted a block party at Fourth Street and University Boulevard where there was games, food, and music provided by KSSU.
“My favorite part is the block party. This is the day that everyone is there and it is awesome to see everyone at one place having a good time,” said Howard.
At 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 21, there was self-defense class held in the gym of the Student Union.
“A Taste of Durant” Merchant/Organization Fair was held in the Student Union from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22. Welcome Week will then came to an end at the Savage Storm football scrimmage at Paul Laird Field beginning at 6 p.m.
There were many activities to enjoy and many places to meet new people and connect with old ones. “If they attend the events they may see someone in their class or someone who they met at Camp SE,” said Howard.
