Director of the Physical Plant Eddie Harbin said over the last semester there were major changes in the Custodial Department with the hire of a new supervisor and the reorganization of the staff.
Terry Miller, who has been a custodian for the university six years, was promoted to custodial supervisor, according to Harbin.
The custodians have now been reorganized into teams that cover certain zones in their cleaning, according to Harbin.
Harbin said, “Under this system instead of a single custodian being responsible for a building, the team leader and their team is responsible for the zone or group of buildings.”
The idea of this system is to help cover all areas that need to be cleaned during times when a staff member is on annual leave or sick, according to Harbin.
Miller said he has seen more work completed in less time since the zoning of custodial workers has been put into place.
According to Harbin, all custodial staff work full-time or 40 hours a week. There are two shifts available, morning shift and evening shift.
Harbin said the morning shift runs from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the evening shift from 1 to 10 p.m.
There are 22 custodians currently employed at Southeastern, according to Miller.
These custodians are separated into five zone teams, according a document provided by Harbin.
The document states zone one consists of four custodians: Team Leader Dave Cooper and Joni Hobbs on morning shifts and Rodney Jeffries and Cindy Frazier on evening shifts.
Zone one covers the Safety, Visual Arts, Biological Science and New Classroom buildings.
Zone two consists of five custodians: Team Leader Doris Mantzey, Gwen Cubley, Paula Mathews, Linda McGuire and Vickie Daniels all on morning shift, according to the document.
Zone two covers the Russell, Fine Arts, Science and Math buildings.
According to the document, zone three consists of five custodians: Team Leader Loretta Davis, Don Robertson, Alvin Harris and Sandy Anderson on morning shift with Robert Smith on evening shift.
Zone three covers the Morrison, Administration, and Library
The document said zone four consists of three custodians: Team Leader Clayton Babb and Donnie Crocker on morning shift with Walter Brearley on evening shift.
Zone four covers the University Center, Massey building, Physical Plant, Halley McKinley, Welcome Center, EOC/Talent Search and Native American Center buildings.
However, Miller said the three zone four custodians also cover the newly refurbished Ballroom and Center for Student Success.
Zone five is made up of four custodians Team Leader Carol Roseboom, Linda McGehee, John Joyner and Robert Shipley all on morning shift, according to the document.
Zone five covers the Bloomer Sullivan Arena/Gym, Football Field, Security/OSBCD and Theatre/Visual and Performing Arts buildings.
Miller said the newly finished construction on the Center for Student Success as well as on the Ballroom has created a larger work surface for the custodians.
This work surface area is not covered accurately at the moment; the custodial staff is looking for two new positions, according to Miller.
Harbin said, “With this group I believe that each one cares about the students and facilities and try their best to present the university in the best way possible.”
