The third annual BrainStorm is currently in progress and gives students, staff and faculty the opportunity to present to the community.
According to the BrainStorm booklet put out by Southeastern Oklahoma State University, this is the third BrainStorm, it is the first one to include all three of Southeastern’s academic schools.
The newly added hosts and participants are the John Massey School of Business and the School of Education and Behavioral Sciences.
Dr. Caryn Witten, associate professor in the department of English, humanities and languages, is also serving as chair for the 2013 event.
In an SE press release Witten said, “It will cover two weeks and involve the entire university community. BrainStorm is a showcase of all the talents and research projects of the students and faculty of Southeastern.”
Until this year BrainStorm was only open to Southeastern’s School of Arts and Sciences, according to se.com.
BrainStorm started on April 15 and will end April 27. During BrainStorm members of the Southeastern community present speeches, lectures, concerts, theater performances and poster presentations.
An example of topics being covered during BrainStorm is Richard Braley and Halet Poovey gave a lecture on “The Odd and Unusual From the History of Safety.” Braley and Poovey’s lecture was about the less successful, odd and outright wrong solutions to problems in the field of safety.
Dell McLain and the theatre students opened Dramapalooza with “New Play Table Reading.” McLain and theatre students read a new play by a local playwright, which was followed by a discussion.
There was also a musical performance by the Southeastern Concert Band with Student Conductors and Jacob Wallace titled, “Student Conductors Spring Concert.” The musical performance consisted of teaching and performance projects the students from the advanced instrumental conducting class have worked on throughout the semester.
In the upcoming week there will be lectures over a variety of topics such as the application of humanities and the social sciences to the study of education, financial statement analysis, Hurricane Katrina, among others.
There will be performances ranging an all day jazz fest at Sports City Café to Dramapalooza. There will also be the premiere of the student made film “Dead Men Walking.”
Poster presentations will be available for viewing April 25 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and presenters will be available from 2-4 p.m. to discuss their projects. There will be 76 posters on display covering a wide variety of topics.
According to the Southeastern website, BrainStorm is open to the public at no cost. Many of the events start in the afternoon and continue into the evening. There are also BrainStorm events on the weekend.
