Greek Week is a long-standing tradition at SE. This year Greek Week was held from April 22 to April 24.
Ashley Bowen, president of Alpha Sigma Tau and a junior elementary education major, said, “Greek Week is important to SE because it bonds the Greeks together. It gives us a chance to get to know each other better and have a stronger bond.”
During Greek Week fraternities and sororities compete in a variety of competitions, and this year the overall winner of Greek Week was decided by the percentage of members present.
SE is home to two nationally recognized sororities, Alpha Sigma Tau and Sigma Sigma Sigma, as well as three nationally recognized fraternities, Lambda Chi Alpha, Sigma Tau Gamma and Tau Kappa Epsilon.
According to Liz Howard, student activities director, the events this year were supposed to have included a co-ed softball game on April 22; however it was canceled due to a scheduling conflict.
On April 23 the fraternities competed in a rib eating contest. There was no time limit; the winners were determined by whichever two members of a fraternity could eat the most ribs without vomiting. The winners were Sigma Tau Gamma, said Howard.
There was also a twister game on April 23, but the sororities decided to include the fraternities. Therefore this game did not count toward Greek Week, according to Howard.
On April 24 there were volleyball competitions. The members of Alpha Sigma Tau won during the sorority competition, and Lambda Chi Alpha won during the fraternity competition, according to Bowen.
The overall winners of Greek Week were Lambda Chi Alpha, Howard said.
“Greek week is really fun and a great experience. It teaches you how to work with others, and you meet new people,” said Bowen.
