The Pistol Annies are making waves in the country music world. They are truly “Hell On Heels” and a force to be reckoned with.
Female country artists have had a hard time making hits this summer with the exception of Lady Antebellum’s Hillary Scott and Carrie Underwood’s duet with Brad Paisley. The only female artist in the Billboard Country Top 20 that isn’t tied with a male vocalist is Taylor Swift with her song “Sparks Fly” at No. 19. However, that may soon change.
Country superstar and local celebrity Miranda Lambert has a new music project that just may break the boys-only trend.
Lambert teamed up with close friends Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley to form the group Pistol Annies earlier this year.
After announcing their upcoming album on the “Girls Night Out” television special, there was a lot of hype surrounding the album’s release.
The album “Hell on Heels” was released Aug. 23. On its first day, the album made it to No. 2 on the iTunes album charts. “Hell on Heels” is in no way cookie-cutter country. The album is filled with saucy language and cultural references only someone from the South could understand.
With only 10 songs on the album, it is a relatively short record, but that doesn’t mean it is short in quality music. All 10 songs have potential to be hits, yet a few stand out from the rest.
The first song that stands out to me is a song called “Boys from the South.” This is just a feel-good song about, well, the boys from the south. This is a song you would sing in the car, with the windows down and the wind whipping through your hair. It’s just one of those songs every girl will relate to. There truly is just “something bout a boy from the South.”
Another song worth reviewing is “Trailer for Rent,” a song about a scorned wife placing an ad in the local paper, after her husband made her mad for the last time. I love the sound of this song. You can just hear the anger and feeling throughout the track.
The song “Beige” is about a pregnant bride on her wedding day. This is a real issue many girls face, but I think this may be the first song of its kind that addresses it. It is a personal song with heartfelt lyrics that make you feel sorry for the bride.
This album is a great country record that any country music fan will enjoy. It showcases the true talent that all the ladies in Pistol Annies possess.
