Southeastern Oklahoma State University’s literary journal, Green Eggs and Hamlet, offers its students the opportunity to become published authors. Greens Eggs and Hamlet does not only accept literary works, but also works falling into other categories, for example art and music. The last day to enter submissions is quickly approaching, for the deadline is Valentines Day, Feb. 14.
Hannah Peterson, a Southeastern art major, is this year’s editor of Green Eggs and Hamlet and explained that it (Green Eggs and Hamlet) is a creative outlet for the school. Students both on campus and remote are allotted the chance to have their creative works published. Participation is not limited to specific majors. While the English department manages Green Eggs and Hamlet, students of any major are able to apply. Faculty and alumni also qualify.
Green Eggs and Hamlet involvement is not restricted to only the authors, artists, and poets featured in the book. Students can join the Green Eggs and Hamlet staff as well.
“Green Eggs and Hamlet staff are people who come to our meetings,” Peterson said. “Anybody who is on our staff will be judging.”
The submitters’ names are all kept anonymous from the judges. Peterson informed that the names and the works are separated before going though the judging process. She explained that Professor Karen Maple, Green Eggs and Hamlet Advisor, “basically keeps our eyes off of it (submission).”
Peterson also mentioned the staff’s engagement in expanding Green Eggs and Hamlet. While this semester staff is working on judging submissions and preparing for publication in April, last semester they focused on informing students of the journal, and recruiting.
“I’ve actually been trying to, well, not only spread word of it all over campus, but also increase the participation of the art studio, because it is equally as important as the writing in my view,” Peterson said.
Copies of past publications can be found in the campus library. For any students looking to join the Green Eggs and Ham staff or simply gain more information, the next meeting will be held Monday, February 3 in the Morrison Building Room 334, at 5 p.m. The 30th Edition of Green Eggs and Hamlet will be released in April.
