Southeastern has featured a variety of events in honor of Black History Month. The festivities began on February 8 with a Civil Rights Leaders Kahoot. The Kahoot is a trivia style game where students answer questions pertaining to a specific topic such as Civil Rights leaders.

This event was followed by a viewing of the film “Children of the Civil Rights” by Julia Clifford. She is a young director who funded her documentary film through Kickstarter. The film focuses on a group of children that conducted sit-ins that led to the desegregation of many Oklahoma City restaurants.

One of the guest speakers was award winning author and public speaker, Tawan Perry. His inspirational speeches and literature are directed towards helping college students succeed. He has been a guest on many of the nations largest news channels including NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC and PBS.

The Black History Month celebration ended with the viewing of another documentary entitled “Slavery By Another Name.” This is a film created by Douglas A. Blackmon that calls attention to the hardships that African Americans faced in post Civil War America.

Students attending these events were able come together to appreciate and learn more about a very important part of American history.
