This year Housing and Residence Life made the decision to create hall councils to replace the Residence Hall Association. Hall councils will represent each residence hall.

Garrett Highland is the hall director for Chickasaw. Jamey Keffer is Hall Director for Shearer. Lisa Plummer is assistant hall director for Choctaw and Jessica Cox is Assistance hall director for North Hall.

Meetings are student-led with a hall director advisor. Shearer Hall Council meets Wednesdays at 7p.m. in the SHS great room. North Hall Council meets Wednesdays at 8:30pm in NH lounge.

Every resident is welcome to attend the meeting in their respective building.

Highland said, “Hall council is an alternative that gives each hall its own voice and allows residents to make decisions that directly affect their own building through purchases and event planning.”

Haley Barnett senior broadcasting major, said, “I think the change is great.” She believes this will give residents a greater sense of responsibility towards their community within their own buildings.

Highland said councils look more like a group discussion than a meeting.

Highland said, “We would love for students to be involved.” There is no obligation to attend every week; it makes the meetings truly flexible.

He hopes to see a diverse set of ideas out of each hall by the end of the semester.
