On the first Saturday of every month, the Art Walk can be found. Along Main Street, reaching from 4th Street to almost 1st Street. But, as the name suggests, you may have to get out of your car and head to the sidewalk to truly see it.
The Walk features goods one might find at a farmer’s market, from goat milk soap at one booth to beer bread at another. Among the art, you can find amazing photographs, drawings, paintings, jewelry, pottery, and even hand crafted pens. When you come, make sure you talk to the vendors. They are all knowledgeable about their craft and always have things to teach, as artist Phyllis Elrod showed me when she explained the chalk pastel piece she was working on at the walk.
Coordinated by Hal Johnsons, the Walk is a fairly young and growing event in the Durant community. Starting last year, it was a year round affair, but severe winter weather forced a schedule change. This year’s Walk started in April, and will end in October. Artober, the name given to next month’s Walk, will be up and running during the Homecoming Parade on October 3rd. The Walk always welcomes more vendors.
Anyone interested in booth space, or with questions about the Art Walk, can contact Hal Johnson at (580) 920-5813.
