Southeastern’s golf team shot a 305 during its final round to finish fourth in the 16-team field at the 15th Annual NSU Golf Classic in Broken Arrow, Okla.
The Savage Storm’s score of 916 was 19 shots shy of the 897 posted by the tournament winner, Central Missouri.
SE, however, was just three shots behind UCO in third and 12 back of host Northeastern State in second.
The Storm was the top Great American Conference finisher among the eight league schools participating, finishing two shots ahead of Arkansas Tech in fifth place.
The team started off their season with a second-place finish at the GAC Fall Preview Sept. 9-10 at the Lake Hefner Golf Club in Oklahoma City.
The event was hosted by Southern Nazarene and took place on the par-72 North Course which played at 6,970 yards.
“First tournaments are always tough,” said Don Hudson, head coach of the men’s golf team, “We felt that it was a very good start to what we think will be a great season.”
Nine of the 11 GAC teams played in the event this year, including the top six from last year.
Jeff Hunter had an outstanding week with all three of his rounds under par: 69, 70 and 70. Marcos Sevilla and Ash Alstadt both had two of the three rounds under par.
SE had qualifying rounds early in the week, determining who would play at NSU.
“There are times that the lineup will change by how well they played in the last tournament and in the qualifying before the next outing,” said Hudson.
The Storm will compete in three other events this fall.
SE will return home for the Texoma Championship Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 at Chickasaw Pointe Golf Resort on the shores of Lake Texoma.
The team will end its season with a trip to the Heart of American Invitational in Warrensburg, Mo., Oct. 7-8, and a trip to San Antonio, Texas, for the Bruce Williams Memorial Invitational Oct. 21-22.
