On Nov. 28, members of 13 different organizations around campus donated their time and Wal-Mart gift cards to students from the Durant Middle School as part of the Presidential Partner’s Project.
Previous years participants spent the afternoon bowling, but with the closure of Durant’s bowling alley other arrangements had to be made. The students gathered in the second floor loft of the Glen D. Johnson Student Union.
It was an opportunity for students of the middle school to learn a little about college life and for members of the different organizations to perform community service.
According to Liz Howard, student activities director, the organizations that participated were Blue Key, Cardinal Key, Alpha Sigma Tau, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Sigma Tau Gamma, American Chemical Society, Green Club, Savage Storm Leaders, Student Government Association, Resident Hall Association, Presidents Leadership Class, Wesley Center and Student Publications.
There were a total of 47 students from Southeastern who sponsored 50 middle school students.
The Southeastern and middle school students played games, talked about college life and enjoyed a pizza party. Some of the games were Dum Dum Deedee Dumdum, Ships and Sailors, Clumps and Monkeys and Men.
When it came time to eat, Howard had the students break into groups for an informal question-and-answer session. The middle school students used the opportunity to find out about what happens on a college campus.
