The Southeastern golf team recently finished the fall portion the season. The Savage Storm brought home the title at the Bison Fall Golf Classic in Cabot, Ark. Sept. 16.
“We tried hard on this tournament, and we had a really good comeback,” said junior Jeff Hunter.
Southeastern bested the field by 10 strokes and took the first tournament victory of the season after being ranked the fifth at the end of the first day.
“It is a good achievement for us especially because our last tournament victory was in 2007,” said head coach Don Hudson.
Southeastern’s golf team has already set several goals for the spring semester. “We are really excited about the conference tournament. I think we are very competitive right now and ready to make a good result,” Hunter said. Another of the team’s goals for the spring semester is to qualify for the NCAA D-II Central Regional Championship.
“One of our wishes is to qualify for the regional tournament which would reflect a whole year of work,” said Hudson.
The players also marked qualifying for regionals as a goal. “I feel like we have a big chance to qualify for the regionals this year,” said junior Robert Perry.
Southeastern’s golf team has 14 members this year including four freshmen.
“I feel like all the guys are getting along and the new members of the team acclimated well,” said Hudson.
The freshmen also feel that the older members of the team helped them integrate better into the team. “My teammates helped me out whenever I needed it, and I am really close to them,” said freshman Matt McIntosh.
Returning this year are juniors Jeff Hunter and Robert Perry who were named second team all-conference.
A loss this semester was senior Christopher George, who was not able to compete because of an injury at his elbow.
“George had a surgery recently, and he couldn’t compete this semester,” Hudson said, “but I hope he will recover soon, and he will help us in the spring.”
The golf team has a new graduate assistant, Nathan Harris. “Nathan helps me out a lot, and he is really on good terms with the other guys,” said Hudson.
The golf team’s first tournament of the spring semester is March 2 in Las Vegas, Nev.
