The Southeastern Storm basketball teams have been battling a season of wins and losses, but it’s down to the wire as the season draws to a close. All the games played this year were Great American Conference games.
The SE women started off their game on Feb. 28 against the school’s biggest rival ECU Tigers at the Bloomer Sullivan Arena. The women played hard but eventually fell to the Tigers losing 69-62. What led to the loss were the 16 turnovers, 15 offensive rebounds and overall missed shots.
At halftime the SE men were trailing the Tigers by 12 points, but they came back in the second half to score 37 points to tie the score 63-63. This put the game in to overtime. The final game -winning shots were taken by Andris Misters a freshman guard that is undecided in major, made one out of two foul shots to make the score 74-73 to tame the tigers.
In between the men’s and women’s games the SE Athletic Department hosted senior night for five SE basketball players.
Seniors on the SE women’s team are Kayle Reaves, a guard from Bowie, Texas, majoring in HPER, and Bailey Welch, a guard from Cashion, majoring in recreation.
Seniors on the SE men’s team are James Harris, a guard from Tulsa, majoring in computer information systems, Stephen Kohli, a forward from El Paso, Texas, majoring in HPER, and Chris Roussell, a guard from Edgard, Louisiana, majoring in business marketing.
The SE men took the court for their game on Feb. 28 against ECU Tigers, the BCM put on their storm trooper mask when Darth Vader entered the court during warm ups.
The men and women have also played several other games in the month of Feb.
The Feb. 23 the SE women’s team took on Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm. The SE women lost 87-81. What led to the loss were the 13 out of the 38 field goals, the eight turnovers and lack of defensive rebounding.
SE men went on to play on Feb. 23 to won against Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm 52-47. Mateus Olivera, a junior forward from Brazil, had 14 points and an assist. Kohli led in the defensive stats with three offensive rebounds, five defensive rebounds, three assists, nine points and a block to keep the Crimson Storm at bay.
The SE women were no match for the Southwestern Bulldogs on Feb. 16. The SE women lost against the Bulldogs 84-81. The women were winning during the first half by three points, but after halftime the women lost because of the lack of possession of the ball.
The SE men took revenge on Feb. 16 against the Bulldogs of Southwestern by beating them 70-51. Misters, hit his season high of 22 points, an offensive rebound, seven defensive rebounds and two assists to cage the Bulldogs.
The Feb. 14 game for the women’s basketball team was against Northwestern Rangers. The women won giving head coach Darin Grover his 200th win 76-64.
Grover said, “I don’t really keep track of things like that. I had to be informed that if we won tonight, which we did, it would be my 200th win.”
Cheree Kiser, a sophomore guard majoring in biology, did not miss a shot all night for a total 15 points with two assists, a block and a steal to help Grover reach that win.
The men continued on Feb. 14 against Northwestern Rangers with a loss of 73-71. Then men lost because of the lack of completion of shots and the 27 fouls that led to Kohli being fouled out of the game
The Savage Storm women played the Southern Arkansas (Ark.) Muleriders on Feb. 9. The SE women were victorious with a score of 89-80. Emily Williams, a sophomore guard majoring in graphic design, led the game with 26 points, three offensive rebounds and five defensive rebounds to help buck off the Muleriders.
The men of SE played on Feb. 9 against the Southern Arkansas (Ark.) Muleriders and won 72-66. Quinton Threadgill, a freshman majoring in occupational safety and health, was perfect at the free throw line totaling his points to 14 with five assists, four rebounds and two steals. Roussell led offensively with 27 points, four assists and rebounds and two steals. Defensively Kohli led with 13 rebounds, a block, a steal and 11 points.
The women took a 79-54 victory over Arkansas-Monticello (Ark) Blossom on Feb. 7. Bailey Welch went 6-6 at the free throw line for a total of 15 points with eight assists.
The men of SE lost on Feb. 7 against Arkansas-Monticello (Ark.) Weevils, 67-74. The SE men had multiple fouls, few offensive rebounds, and lack completion at field goals
The women of SE won against Henderson State (Ark.) Reddies 74-65 on Feb. 2. Kiser had 20 points, two assists, a block and two steals to help insure the win for the Storm.
The men of SE won on Feb. 2 in double overtime against Henderson State (Ark.) Reddies 88-87. Roussell was perfect on the free throw line to total out with 27 points, four assists, a block and two steals. Threadgill had a season high of 25 points, six assists and three steals to help seal the victory over the Reddies.
The next challenge for the SE men’s and women’s basketball is Harding (Ark.) Bison on March 2.
