In a vibrant celebration of the Lunar New Year, the Housing and Residence Life department hosted an engaging program on Feb. 20.
The event, held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the student union, marked the beginning of the Year of the Snake with various activities designed to foster community and cultural appreciation.
Lead Residence Assistant Kinsley Whitehouse, who led the charge of the program, emphasized the program’s intent to engage students while providing educational experiences. “The program is intentionally designed to engage students while they are learning something,” Whitehouse said.
This approach ensured that students were not only having fun but also gaining valuable insights into Asian traditions and customs.
Participants enjoyed a range of activities, including games, Kahoot quizzes, and crafts. Winners of the Kahoot competition received prizes, adding a competitive spirit to the festivities.
The games and quizzes were tailored to test participants’ knowledge about the Lunar New Year, its significance, and various cultural practices associated with it. This interactive element made learning enjoyable and memorable.
The event also featured giveaways and snacks from Asian Gourmet, enhancing the cultural experience for attendees. Traditional Lunar New Year treats like Rangoons, Egg rolls, and Fortune Cookies were available, offering a taste of authentic Asian cuisine.
Whitehouse noted that this program was a first for Housing and Residence Life, highlighting the department’s commitment to inclusivity and cultural diversity. “After talking with several faculty members, it is clear this is something Asian faculty are passionate about,” Whitehouse said.
The program aimed to create connections between students and faculty beyond the classroom setting, fostering a more inclusive and understanding campus environment.
Students who attended had the opportunity to learn about Asian culture while enjoying a festive atmosphere.
The crafts station, for example, allowed students to create traditional Lunar New Year decorations such as paper lanterns, which they could take home as souvenirs.
These hands-on activities not only provided a creative outlet but also deepened students’ appreciation for Asian art and craftsmanship.
Whether participating in games or simply stopping by for a snack, attendees found the event to be a positive way to engage with their community. The program successfully brought together students and faculty, fostering a sense of belonging and cultural understanding.
The Lunar New Year celebration not only marked the beginning of the Year of the Snake but also strengthened the bonds within the campus community. Housing and Residence Life looks forward to continuing such programs in the future, further enhancing the student experience.
