State Question 791 proposes modern alcohol laws

Zach Brittingham, Staff Writer

In Oklahoma A petition has begun to amend the current state legislation regarding the sale of alcoholic beverages.  The proposed amendment would basically allow any store that has a liquor license to sell higher percentage alcohol and to be able to sell those drinks every day of the year with the exceptions of Thanksgiving and Christmas. That means people can finally make beer runs on Sundays. Not only would it allow the drinks to be stronger, but also refrigerated.

It does not allow for any out of state entity to own any part of a liquor license for a store operating in Oklahoma. This is a good thing because it keeps money here locally instead of other major companies monopolizing the market. This also really helps out our local brewers because they can sell their full strength product directly to customers or to resellers.

There are some who oppose this law, and those are the retail package stores and wine grocery stores because the amendment states those buildings must be 500 feet apart. Besides those guys almost everyone is okay with this law, including Wal-Mart.

Stronger beer and we can get it on Sundays to go with watching football. Sounds good to me. Overall, this is a great amendment to add to our state constitution because it will modernize our current liquor laws while also benefiting our communities by bringing in more local profits and contributing to programs that combat the negatives to alcohol sales, such as drunk driving and alcohol abuse.
