The number of electors each state receives is based on the number of congressmen and senators each state has, with the exception of states with small populations. Each state is guaranteed at least three electoral college votes, regardless of size. As of Oct. 12, presidential candidate Joe Biden was leading in the polls over incumbent president Donald Trump. 270 votes are needed to win a presidential election.
