The Debate Watch Party at Southeastern was held in Shearer Hall at 7:45 p.m. on Sept. 26. The event was facilitated by Mike Davis and Shannon McCraw.

Festive snacks were provided such as patriotic popcorn and mini beverages with blue sugar rims. Although the setting of the event was lighthearted, the 2016 presidential debate was not.

The audience sat on couches and foldable chairs while quietly anticipating the debate. Observers were encouraged to live tweet using the hashtag #sedebatewatch.

Audience members were glued to the screen and were actively tweeting their reactions. After the debate ended Davis and McCraw informed the audience that they should consider an alternative to listening to the national commentary.

Davis added that it would be beneficial for audience members to have a conversation about their initial thoughts of the debate without being tainted or persuaded by news channels and major tv stations.

Audience members came to a consensus that the majority of the questions asked were not necessarily relevant to a younger demographic such the audience in Shearer Hall.

Observers of the debate also analyzed the behavior of facilitator Lester Holt and questioned whether or not he was assertive enough throughout the debate.

Watch parties can help students and community members get more informed about each candidate in addition to being a social event on campus.

Debate watch parties will continue to be held in Shearer Hall at 7:45 p.m. The upcoming debate parties will be on Oct. 4 and Oct. 9.
