DURANT – The Southeastern football team opened its 2025 season with a conference game blowout.
On Thursday September 4, the team faced the University of Arkansas-Monticello at Paul Laird Field at Spend Life Wisely Stadium. The game was the Savage Storm’s debut and they showed out with a full 91-man roster.
Dialed in on his job, junior kicker Dylan Cox recorded 14 points in the game with three successful field goals and five extra points.
Sophomore quarterback, Luke Hohenberger, also popped out with 156 passing yards and one touchdown. Continuing the game with a healthy and prepared lineup, Southeastern defeated fellow Great American Conference (GAC) member Arkansas-Monticello by a score of 44–13.
Arkansas-Monticello finished just behind Southeastern in the 2024 conference standings at eighth place. However, UAM was unable to keep up with Southeastern’s pace Thursday night as Southeastern averaged 11 points a quarter.
Senior running back DJ Brown played a pivotal role in the victory and praised both preparation and execution on the offensive side of the ball.
“I think offensively we executed well,” Brown said. “Coach McGuire had a great game plan for us coming in, and we executed certain aspects in a good way. Our offensive line played well also. There are some things we need to get cleaned up, but it was a good start to the season for sure.”
The win was particularly significant for Southeastern, as it not only marked a key conference win, but also came on their home turf in front of a supportive home crowd.
Next week, the Savage Storm football team will hit the road for Week Two of GAC football. Traveling to Arkadelphia, Arkansas next week, Southeastern Oklahoma State football will face Ouachita Baptist at 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 13.
