The Southeastern football team held strong against Henderson State on Saturday September 21. Southeastern put up 35 points while allowing Henderson to score 44. The Savage Storm took the tough loss taking their record to 1-2.
At the end of the first quarter Henderson was ahead of the Storm 17-7, after Southeastern scored with 4:47 to go off a pass into the end zone.
Henderson scored their first touchdown with 11:25 on the clock but was held by the Savage Storm defense until the 5:38 mark. The Reddies scored their second touchdown and just over three minutes later would kick a 30-yard field goal taking the score into the second quarter, 17-7.
Southeastern’s defense in the second quarter held its own not giving up any points to Henderson. The Savage Storm offense took to the field with 5:42 to go in the half and scored a touchdown bringing themselves within three points of their opponent.
Henderson scored another touchdown with 11:17 in third quarter. Giving Southeastern the ball from the kick-off the Savage Storm pushed down field to score just minutes after the Reddies. The Southeastern extra point was good and the score was closer than ever, 24-21, with Henderson leading.
After a bad snap to the punter on a fourth down, Henderson recovered a Southeastern fumble and the Reddies were within ten yards of their own end zone. With Henderson threatening to score, the Savage Storm defense toughened up. Southeastern’s Logan Russell nabbed the ball from the Henderson quarterback. With great blocks from his teammates, Russell was able to carry the ball from end zone to end zone scoring a Southeastern touchdown. With 2:48 remaining in the third quarter Southeastern took their first lead of the game, 28-24.
Henderson started the fourth quarter with seventeen unanswered points leading the Savage Storm, 41-28. With the Reddies pulling away, the Southeastern offense tacked on one more touchdown to end their scoring night with 35 points. With 1:58 in the game Henderson kicked a field goal to end the night with the 44-35 victory.
In the season opener Devlon Wortham ran for 220 yards and three touchdowns as SE picked up a 56-50 win over Southern Arkansas to open up 1-0 in the Great American Conference standings.
The Storm next travelled to Monticello, Ark., and suffered a 42-34 loss against the University of Arkansas at Monticello.
Southeastern will next head to Arkadelphia, Ark. where they will battle Ouachita Baptist University at 6 p.m. on Sept. 28.
The Tigers are 2-0 in conference play after defeating East Central University and Southern Nazarene University in their first two contests of the season.
