Southeastern Oklahoma State University held the OGET study workshop on Feb. 1, 2017. Southeastern holds the workshop every year for students aspiring to work in education.

In 1995, the Oklahoma Commission for Teacher Preparation (OCTP) was given the responsibility by the Oklahoma legislature to develop and implement competency based assessment systems for educator licensure/certifications in the state of Oklahoma.

OGET stands for Oklahoma General Education Test which is a four hour exam composed of mathematics and reading in English. The OGET is the first exam to be taken by education majors. Then, they are allowed to take other tests such as the Oklahoma Subject Area Test and the Oklahoma Professional Teaching Exam.

The OGET covers critical thinking and general education which are fundamental to becoming a teacher. The next exam is the OSAT, which covers subject matter. Finally the OPTE tests for professional knowledge and skills.

The certification exams are administered twelve times a year through paper based administrations across the state as well as computer based administrations available both state and nationwide.

The Southeastern OGET workshop helps attendees study for the exam by going over the math, English and reading as well as developing better critical thinking skills.

“I was pursuing an education degree and I needed to know more about education,” said Kelsi Winchester, an instructor for the OGET workshop who has taken the exam previously. “Math is one of my favorite subjects and I love helping people as much as a I can,” said Winchester.

While the OGET workshop is held at the Durant SOSU campus. The workshop video is linked with other SOSU campuses in Idabel, McAlester and Hugo to help other aspiring education majors prepare for the exam.
